Cross Border Power Trade
Trading With Nepal
Nepal and India has been exchanging power for many years through a few transmission links at 132 kV, 33 kV and 11 kV level operating radially.
Further, PTC has been consistently supplying 20 to 35 MW of power to Nepal Electricity Authority on commercial terms since 2008 during dry season through 132 kV Tanakpur – Mahendranagar Transmission line to overcome acute power shortage in Nepal.
On long-term (25 year) basis, India and Nepal are jointly implementing & developing 400kV D/c transmission line between Dhalkebar (in Nepal) and Muzaffarpur (in India) by IL&FS, PGCIL & NEA. This transmission line became Operational under an interim arrangement during February 2016.
PTC has signed PSA with NEA for supply of 150 MW for 25 years facilitating the financial closure of Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur line (December 2011).
The above Cross border transmission lines to be constructed between Nepal and India will eventually be helpful not only for the long term power import and export between Nepal and India, but also for providing the crucial links to a regional SAARC grid in future.
